MIDNIGHT TERROR ENDS IN GUNFIRE: ARMY STORMS KIDNAPPERS’ HIDEOUT, RESCUES ENUGU CLERIC
Fear gripped Ezimo community in Udenu Local Government Area of Enugu State in the early hours of Thursday, January 29, 2026, when heavily armed kidnappers struck at midnight, storming the home of Reverend Johnson Anayo Onugwu and dragging him away at gunpoint.
But the kidnappers’ triumph was short-lived.
Acting on hot, actionable intelligence, troops of the Nigerian Army’s 82 Division Garrison, in a swift joint operation with other security agencies, launched a manhunt across the Udenu axis. The pursuit cut through the Itabolo area and climaxed in Okpakeke community, where the soldiers finally caught up with the fleeing criminals.
What followed was a fierce exchange of gunfire.
According to security expert Zagazola Makama, the troops engaged the kidnappers in a heated gun battle that shattered the criminals’ escape plan and led to the dramatic rescue of the abducted cleric.
“The troops engaged the kidnappers at Okpakeke community in a gun battle, which led to the successful rescue of the victim,” Makama confirmed.
